Presentation currency

Presentation currency is the currency in which an entity or a group publishes its financial statements. Unlike functional currency, which is determined by economic facts, the presentation currency is a free choice under IAS 21: any currency may be used.

In practice the choice follows the audience. A group lists in the currency of its main capital market, so a European group seeking American investors may publish in dollars. Local statutory filings, sector comparability and the parent company's own currency all pull in different directions. Some groups publish in one currency and provide supplementary information in another.

The two concepts coincide often enough to be confused. A French group whose entities operate in euros has the euro as both functional and presentation currency, and no conversion is needed. The distinction becomes visible only when they diverge, which is the normal situation for any group with foreign subsidiaries.

Choosing a presentation currency has a direct accounting consequence. Every entity whose functional currency differs from it must be restated through currency translation at each close, and each restatement generates a translation adjustment that accumulates in equity. Changing the presentation currency mid-life is a change of presentation applied retrospectively, which means restating comparatives.

Operationally, the constraint is that entities keep their books in their own functional currency while the group reports in a single one. Reconciling those views at each close is where the consolidation package process bites, and where consolidating data from multiple ERPs removes most of the manual restatement work.
