Agentic layer finance

An agentic layer in finance is a software architecture positioned between existing systems, ERP, accounting tools, banking feeds, supplier inboxes, that orchestrates AI agents to execute, verify, and control financial workflows across all of them simultaneously, without replacing any single system.

The term distinguishes a new category of tools from both ERP systems and generic AI tools. An ERP records and processes transactions within its own boundaries. A generalist AI answers questions about data. An agentic layer acts across systems: it reads an invoice from Gmail, cross-references it against a purchase order from the ERP, validates the price against a negotiated price list, and, when everything checks out, pushes the validated entry back via API. It operates between the tools, not instead of them.

The architectural insight is critical. ERP incumbents (SAP, NetSuite, Sage) operate within a closed system, their strength is transaction processing within their own schema. They cannot cross-reference data from systems they don't own. Generalist AI tools (Claude, Dust, Langdock) can reason across systems but lack the finance-specific business rules, audit trail, and production reliability that critical financial workflows require. Phacet occupies the gap: finance depth × cross-system execution × auditability, the three properties that generalists and ERP incumbents cannot deliver together.

Phacet's agentic layer runs on 8 architectural layers: Tables (data structuring), Review & Control (human validation), Sourcing & Audit (confidence scores, traceability), Agent (AI execution, AI Match), Dashboards (insights), Integrations, Roles & Permissions, and Workflows. Generalist AI tools have only layers 4 and 5. ERPs have layers 1, 6, and 8, in silos.

For DAFs evaluating their finance stack, the agentic layer is the answer to "how do we get AI to control our finance processes, without replacing the tools we already have?"
